There are no two ways to slice this: the genetically-engineered apple that the USDA is about to approve is not good news. Here is why: 1/ Despite what the powers that be are claiming, there is NO conclusive scientific evidence that GMO (genetically modified organisms) are safe for our health, our children's and their children's. Just allow me to share that the disturbing news regarding the health issues of pigs that have been fed GMO over several generations gives me pause, to say the least. Feeding our children GMO corn syrup-laced processed food is bad enough. Many of us are aware of the...

Let's cut to the chase: 1/ there's no such thing as a scientific consensus on GMO ( genetically modified organisms ) safety—but a battle of opinions supported by studies that each side unsurprisingly deems irrefutable or deeply flawed 2/ GMO benefit nobody today but the IP owners of the patented seeds (or rather, their bottom line)--not the consumer, not the small farmer, despite the biotech industry's claims to the contrary: the former is unwittingly acting as a guinea pig, the latter is enslaved to patented seeds whose false promises have already driven many to suicide . The media is all abuzz with contradictory rumors and statements after a case of mad-cow disease (or bovine spongiform encephalopathy, BSE ) was found this week in California. The beef industry assures there's nothing to worry about. Understandably, consumers are confused. Here is the first thing to bear in mind: mad-cow disease is the tip of a nasty iceberg called feeding-livestock-'rendered'-animal-wastes. These include slaughterhouse wastes, animals that died before slaughter, supermarkets and restaurants refuse, as well as waste from animal farms including manure and poultry litter. Now,...

Earth Day is a great opportunity to remember and reflect, if only for a moment, on the symbiotic relationship between our planet and its inhabitants. Now, what if we could be present to it every day, and taste daily the beautiful richness it gives our lives? Eating presents us and our families with that wondrous opportunity several times a day. After all, food is our primal link with nature, with the plant kingdom and the animal kingdom; a link that we too often take for granted. Caught in the hustle-bustle and buzyness of life, we have shuffled and reshuffled our priorities so that what...

Can you imagine a world where our children, and their children's children, have access to plentiful, fresh, nutritious food? This question is not as flippant as it may sound. Food security is the single most important issue facing mankind today. The United States is no exception. Our food is making us sick. The way it's produced is wasting energy, destroying our environment, and depleting vital natural resources including soil, water and cultivated biodiversity. More and more people have no access to healthy food. Meanwhile, our government has been supporting a destructive global food system...
