Charmaine Lang is a queer, Black feminist scholar and freelance writer based in North Carolina. Her academic work at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee focuses on the self-care and wellness practices of Black women activists. As a reiki and sound healing practitioner, she has worked with organizations to bring healing justice to communities of color. Her writing has appeared in Rewire.News, Ms. Magazine, and The Root. Self-care has been dismissed as selfish, or worse, a capitalistic trend, by some who believe that community care is the only route to health.
