It's May - a month of great things! First up: Kristin's new book Keep Marching has launched! The book is part guide, part inspiration to building the world we seek, and part call to action. See more on a special opportunity to share Keep Marching with a woman you love for Mother's Day, below. And yes - Mother's Day is coming up too! It's so important to pause and thank the parents and parent-figures in our lives... And we're so thankful for all of YOU and your tireless energy for stepping up and speaking out about issues facing our families.
This week's top #5Actions list also includes hot items around SNAP, gun safety, internet privacy, and more. As always, please take a moment to quickly skim the lineup and make sure you've checked everything off for the week. And note: we have not one, but three notes with additional fun bits at the very end. What a week!
Thank you for all you do!
1. Urge Amazon to Tell Be Clear About How It Will Use Kids' Data
BACKGROUND: Amazon is releasing its new Echo Dot speaker for kids next week, and we're concerned because the company has not made it clear how it will use the information the device gathers from our kids. Parents know technology and information can be a force for good. We want our children to explore, investigate and challenge their world. But, as they do this, we do not want a record of their interests, questions and preferences being placed at risk. Join us to tell Jeff Bezos and Amazon to be clear about what they'll do with the data they collect, and how they'll make sure it's safely stored!
2. Give Keep Marching to a Mom You Love!!
BACKGROUND: This Mother’s Day, help a mom you love step into power — give her Keep Marching! Women are rising with strength, resilience, and courage. We know what kind of country we want, and we're tired of waiting for it! Just in time for Mother’s Day, we’re inviting supporters like you to give the Keep Marching book to a mom you love (including you!), and support the movement that fights every day for moms and families. Make a contribution of $25 or more to MomsRising today with this special link, and we’ll send a beautiful e-card to announce your gift!
3. Tell Congress: No more military-style assault weapons and high-cap magazines!
BACKGROUND: Recently a man wearing nothing but a green jacket walked into a Waffle House in Antioch, TN, and shot four people to death, injuring another four. Our hearts ache for the victims’ families and the Antioch community. But we are also furious that once again a murderous person reached for an AR-15, a weapon of war, and used it as it was designed to be used: to kill many people at once! It’s nothing short of outrageous that civilians have access to the lethality of AR-15s and other military-style semi-automatic assaults weapons and high-capacity ammunition, which are meant for battlefields, not our schools, churches, streets and communities. This needs to end now! Tell Congress that it must act NOW to ban military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition.
4. Tell your U.S. Representative: Hands off SNAP!
BACKGROUND: Now is the moment where we need you to speak out to protect the health and nutrition of children, moms, and low-income families! Moms, dads, and concerned voters have been speaking out by the thousands because we know how vital nutrition programs like SNAP (food stamps) are to struggling families. It’s time to turn up the volume. The U.S. House of Representatives is set to vote on a harmful, terrible, and unnecessary Farm Bill next week, which would put at risk the nutrition assistance of millions of people. We need you to speak out now! And we need you to show up…literally! ***SIGN UP NOW to print out a letter and drop it off at your U.S. Representative's local office by Friday, May 11th ? It’s easy. We’ll send you everything you’ll need, including information about how to find your local office.
5. Sign the Card to Women Who Keep Marching -> THANK YOU!
BACKGROUND: It’s time to celebrate us. It’s time to applaud our power together. It’s time to lift other women. Kristin's new book, Keep Marching, came out on May 1 in stores across the nation. It celebrates and grows our power together. And 100% of author proceeds go to MomsRising. Will you take a moment to sign our public THANK YOU to all the women who are rising and who keep marching, resisting, and persisting for change? When you sign on, your thank you will be seen by leaders at all levels from household to U.S. House who are lifting other women. Why? Because after you sign on, we’ll share the signatures on a webpage so each and every member of MomsRising knows they aren’t alone and that we’re building a movement where everyone can rise. We’re even thinking of taking out some newspaper ads to show how very strong we are together as we help remind us all to vote and celebrate our power together.
Thank you for all you do and #KeepMarching!
P.S. Have you signed up for our mobile list yet? With MomsRising Mobile, you can make a difference in our critical campaigns via text message on your cell phone while on the go!
