I’ve been in the child protection business for 11 years and a mommy for 8, so there’s not much that fazes me. I’ve always had what my mom calls an “iron stomach”—I’ve had stomach flu exactly once, and food poisoning never—and remain completely undaunted by the spectacular range of grossness that...

We all know moms and educators like Sharonda Singleton-Coleman. At school she was running "cheek to cheek" with the students on her track team, pushing and motivating them to be the best they can be. At home she was being an amazing mother: raising teens, loving them, praying for them, smiling, and, (of course) hiding the TV remote so they didn’t have too much screen time. While this mother of three gave life and nurtured so many, her life was taken when she and eight others were gunned down in a vicious act of racial terrorism, the kind that has for too long been glorified by the iconography of the Confederate flag. It's time to take the confederate flags down. No child should lose their mother to racial terrorism. All families should be protected by our nation's promise of liberty and justice for all.

Summer is the perfect time for books that inspire kids...

We just came for a birthday party,” pleaded one Black male teen that had been forced to the floor. I watched the video from Craig Ranch North Community Pool in McKinney, Texas four times. Honestly, when I first saw the video I thought it was a joke. With the overly excited officer doing a jump and...

In recent years, the United States' failure to provide paid maternity leave has met with scorn from everyone from U.S. senators to late night comedians. This is well deserved: the U.S. remains the only industrialized nation that doesn't guarantee at least some paid leave to new moms, despite its proven benefits for both maternal and child health. Yet the bigger issue globally is paternity leave. Today, while 96% of countries provide paid leave to mothers, only 49% provide any leave to fathers--and among those that do, it's often for two weeks or less. By granting leave only to mothers, governments worldwide have embedded inequality in the law.
