As U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin says,
“There is no fourth branch of government called Elon Musk.”
And yet the unelected richest man in the world, Elon Musk, is attempting to shut down government agencies, take over our federal payment systems (he now has access to your social security number, by the way), and bring our government to a grinding halt – including the government employees who are our air traffic controllers. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Elon Musk, the man who gave $288 MILLION to help elect Donald Trump and then performed a Nazi salute during inauguration activities that we all saw, is attempting a full-on assault on democracy. [5] Trump and his team have halted government funding authorized by Congress, abandoning the checks and balances on which our government depends. Trump has given access to private information to non-governmental actors, breaking discretion, which is key to our security. In short, Trump is acting like a king, but we don’t have kings in the United States, we have three separate and co-equal branches of government.
Why is Elon Musk and Trump’s massive overreach such a threat to our families, communities, and economy? Thrown into all the chaos, the basics of government are ceasing to work — everything from our Medicaid and healthcare systems to critical FAA warning systems, to eliminating entire departments that oversee everything from water safety to investigating sexual assault on college campuses.
Elon Musk has not gone through any of the proper channels to access classified information - especially at the Treasury Department! Elon Musk doesn’t know what he’s doing, and he wasn’t elected, and Donald Trump isn’t a king.
The Trump White House is causing chaos and wreaking havoc on programs, systems, and agencies that have real-world consequences and have been set up to assist the American people. He’s having a toddler’s temper tantrum on a national stage and it’s time for Congress to step up and remind Trump that Congress has control of the national purse.
We need all of our elected officials, including every member of Congress, to stand up to Donald Trump. He won by a narrow margin; Trump doesn’t have the mandate he pretends to have. [6] And our members of Congress must stand up to him.
There is no time for business as usual: We need Congress to double down and do the jobs they were hired to do for the people in our country.
