We’ve heard for months that the economy is improving, except for one stubborn problem: workers’ wages aren’t rising the way they should be in a recovery. Productivity goes up, corporate profits go up, CEO pay goes way up—but most working people’s paychecks are stuck. What we haven’t heard as much about is how we can raise wages. The economy is not like the weather—it doesn’t just happen to us, and we don’t have to just sit and wait for it to get better. The leaders we elect make the policy decisions that can fix the economy. Now it’s our job to put enough pressure on them until they actually do.

A time to finally kick off that new healthy habit, or maybe a time to end that not-so-great one. And it’s also a time to sweep away the clutter, from your inbox (don’t get me started)...

As we reflect on the past year, we see that 2014 brought some progress on protecting the reproductive health and rights of women who are incarcerated, but also revealed the deep, even intractable, problems that women face inside prison walls. Reducing the scale of incarceration is a critical part of any strategy to safeguard the health, rights, and futures of women who experience incarceration.

Two months ago, my heart froze when I heard about a school shooting at a high school near me in the Seattle-area. On Oct. 24, a shooter killed 4 classmates before fatally wounding himself at Marysville Pilchuck High School.

My daughter, Violet, has a rare, life-threatening health condition. When she was young, she had hundreds of seizures, sometimes 30 a day. Her hospital visits sometimes cost more than $250,000 EACH. Before healthcare reform, we had a lifetime limit on Violet’s insurance policy. Now we don’t. Now she’s not going to die because we can’t afford the medicine.
