House Republican Tax Bill ‘Throws Working Families Under the Bus’
By passing a harmful, heinous tax bill, House Republicans today threw working families under the bus in order to kowtow to big corporations and the wealthiest 1 percent of people in our country. This bill will give tax breaks to those who need it least while doing real damage to our economy and working families – including the middle class, low-income communities, seniors, people with disabilities, communities of color, women, teachers, students, and people in need of health care. That’s pretty much everyone. The faulty House Republican tax reform plan must not become law.
No matter how much Republicans in Congress and the Trump administration try to deceive us, the moms of America know the truth: The bill the House passed today will be disastrous for working families and our economy. It will raise taxes for many middle-class families and gut essential programs that boost our health care, our nutrition, our education, and our economy – all so the rich can get richer. It will starve the federal budget in ways that are sure to put Medicaid, Medicare, Head Start, SNAP, and other essential programs on the chopping block.
All of us doing well together is what adds up to make the American Dream possible and to make our economy prosper. We are not a zero-sum game country. This tax plan takes an axe to the American Dream. Trickle-down economics has never worked in the past. It’s not going to work now. And it’s time for the Congressional Republicans to rethink their approach so they can open the door to opportunity for our nation, not slam it shut.
The truth is this tax bill isn’t for the moms of America – it’s for Wall Street executives, real estate moguls and golf course owners. It won’t create jobs. It will hurt our economy. It will create a legacy of debt that our children will be forced to pay off. It will hurt our families. Quite simply, this bill is immoral. The best way to boost our economy and our families is to make investments in programs that advance access to health care, nutrition, and early education —not rob these programs to give tax cuts to the wealthy and powerful.
We will work tirelessly to convince the U.S. Senate to reject this plan and instead work to make sure our tax code supports working families. That’s what our country really needs.
