Our Families Deserve to be Fed: Reflections on New 2023 USDA Data on Food Security!
Every family deserves access to high-quality, nutritious food to keep our children healthy and happy. The USDA recently released data on U.S. household food security from 2023, finding one in SEVEN households (13.5 percent) in America struggled with hunger. The rates of food insecurity were higher for Black (23.3 percent) and Latinx (21.9 percent) U.S. households compared to the rate of White non-Latinx U.S. households (9.9 percent). A staggering ONE in FIVE U.S. children experienced hunger in 2023! This is why food assistance programs, like SNAP, WIC, and free school meals, are vital for families across the country, especially those in marginalized communities.
One of our members, Aretha, shares her story on how the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) lifted her up during a difficult time. She discusses how this nutrition assistance program supported her during a health crisis. 58.1 percent of food-insecure families benefited from at least one nutrition assistance program last year, with 42.3 percent of these families relying on SNAP; 28.9 percent relying on the National School Lunch Program (NSLP); and 7 percent relying on the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) to access the nutrition support they need.
After recovering from a health crisis, our member Aretha shares how #SNAP gave her critical support to help feed herself and her family.
