We’re experiencing a full frontal assault on our nation’s healthcare programs!
As the fight for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) continues, unbelievably a new storm is brewing: Medicaid and the healthcare of more than 70 million Americans—including providing assistance for over half the births in the U.S.— is now at risk.
What’s happening? Some members of the U.S. Congress, as well as Donald Trump’s pick for Secretary of Health and Human Services, Tom Price, are proposing to make major cuts and changes (including block grants) to Medicaid, one of our nation’s most treasured and successful healthcare programs. Not on our watch!
We’ve beaten back these types of proposed cuts to Medicaid before and we need YOUR help to do it again!
These proposed cuts, if passed, will hurt our families, our economy, and our nation. Medicaid is a critical support for families, especially those of us who are caring for children, have aging parents, or have family members with disabilities. Families like AnnMarie’s:
“My daughter, Grace, was born at 26 weeks for reasons that are unknown. She was 2 lbs 6 oz. The NICU was my daughter’s home for the first two and a half months of her life. Even with excellent health care coverage, there is no way that Grace’s father and I could ever have paid for the extensive care she received. We benefited from Medicaid for the first year of her life because of Grace’s prematurity. This was a lifesaver for us as the debt from her hospitalization and follow-up medical care would have crippled us financially for the rest of our lives. Because this coverage was available, we were able to do the best thing possible: We got to be present parents.”
Why is Medicaid so important? Medicaid provides health coverage for approximately 72.5 million people, including low-income children and parents, pregnant women, children and adults with disabilities and chronic illnesses, and the elderly. In fact, half of all births and 70% of all nursing home residents use Medicaid.
These programs are good for families and good for the economy. Those of us caring for children, aging parents, or family members with disabilities know how critical Medicaid is for making it possible for us to work and care for our families.
These proposed cuts and changes to Medicaid are NOT ok! In years past, we have successfully defeated similar proposals when we made our voices loud and clear! We are going to need YOUR help in making a swift and loud response because Congress is starting to consider these terrible proposals again—and they are wrongly embolden by a Health and Human Services Secretary that strongly agrees with these changes in Medicaid. Tom Price pretty much admitted that his plans to block grant Medicaid would lead to less low-income people and those in serious need from being able to access vital healthcare.
We can’t let Tom Price and those that support him get their way!
There are a lot of fights ahead of us on healthcare but our voices are making a difference already. In fact, the process to repeal the ACA has significantly slowed down once members of Congress heard the outcry from their constituents. When we speak out and tell our stories, we win! This is why after you take action, we need you to forward this email to your friends and also post the action link on Facebook and Twitter. We need as many people as possible speaking out to protect Medicaid.
Together we can protect the healthcare of our families.
P.S. Do you have experience with Medicaid? Great! We want to hear from you. Sharing stories, like AnnMarie’s above, is super important in showing elected leaders, the press, and other parents how programs like Medicaid affect real families. Share your experience with us here.
