I don't think I'm alone in saying that, as a parent, I struggle with living in the moment. Usually I'm thinking into the future, running through the never shrinking to-do list, thinking about the next meal, the next load of laundry, and the next impending deadline. So this weekend, when my son and I were cooking in the kitchen (one of his favorite things to do together), I had one of those rare moments that helped ground me to the present. I thought, for the first time ever in his seven and a half years of life, that this was something that my son was always going to remember. Maybe not this...

Although I love the month of October for changing leaves, cooling temperatures, apples, cider, and squash, there is also a sense of dread that comes over me. Along with the ghosts, spiders, and vampires, there is a bit of unease about the upcoming battle between a mom and the candy industry. As soon as October hits I start thinking about how to give my kids a fun Halloween while keeping the sugar levels reasonable. So far I have gotten away with this by loading up on fun, healthy treats at home, trick-or-treating at three or four houses, and calling it a night. They have no idea that other...

Confession. Making my kids lunch every day is hard for me. I’m not proud of this. I am a mom that works in childhood obesity prevention, I have overhauled the snack program at our daycare, I am active in the local food movement, and I’m the mom that doesn’t bring chips or cookies for the baseball team. I drool over Pinterest pictures of bento-style lunch boxes overflowing with fruits, vegetables, homemade dips, adorable reusable napkins, and little notes that say, “Have a great day!” And yet this morning, when I finally pulled myself out of bed and realized that the bus was coming in 12...

All year I’ve been looking forward to enjoying lazy days at the swimming pool with my children, alternating between reading a good book in the shade and jumping in for some laps every hour or so. I love how swimming makes you feel like you have really worked every muscle in your body, and the kids always go to bed early after a trip to the pool. On long summer nights when getting them to sleep with sunshine still streaming through the window is a near impossibility, the swimming pool seems like the ultimate gift to parents. But there is one huge drawback to all the fun and exercise that can...

See you later sugary soda, chips, and candy! You see, you are once-in-a-while foods which have no place in schools where students can buy you every day. It is time to feed our kids the fuel they need to get through the school day, to support their physical health, and to teach them how to live healthy lives. And that is exactly what the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is trying to do with a big announcement this week finalizing the new rules about what snack foods and beverages are allowed to be sold to our kids in school. It was a nice surprise that the department moved so quickly to...

This story from Seaman High School in Topeka, Kansas shows that despite the best intentions of schools and the hard work of teachers, trying to create an environment with healthier vending choices can be extremely difficult and time consuming. National standards on competitive foods sold in schools would complement recent updates to the school meal programs and are a crucial step in addressing the childhood obesity epidemic. Schools and teachers need to have support from administrators to make these changes effective. When physical education and health teacher Claudia Welch signed up her...

The USDA has released long-awaited guidelines for foods sold in school vending machines, snack carts and school stores. These guidelines will cover any snack item, side item or beverage sold outside of the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Programs. We at the Alliance for a Healthier Generation are excited to see these federal guidelines moving forward, putting the nutrition of all foods and beverages in school buildings on a level playing field. The choices students have access to through vending, snack carts and school stores should mirror the nutritious choices they see in the...

Let’s be clear: I support giving children choices and empowering them to make good ones. Those are crucial life skills that need to be reinforced at home and at school. That being said, the adults at home and at school have a responsibility to make sure that the choices presented are all healthy choices. As a parent, I want to send my son off to school knowing that if he is hungry he can go to a machine to choose a yogurt or an apple. I have no problem with helping the school fill its empty coffers by selling snacks at lunch or at events, as long as those snacks are of sound nutritional...

The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, signed into law in December 2010, charged the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) with updating school food nutrition standards to reflect the latest nutrition science. Updates to the nutrition standards for school meals went into effect at the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year, and schools across the country have been making changes to provide students with healthier choices. The schools and districts mentioned below are all members of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s Healthy Schools Program, which provides training, resources and support to...

Jessica Johnson may be new to her position as the Food Service Director for Sycamore School District in Cincinnati but she is no novice when it comes to finding innovative ideas to keep her students and staff smiling. Since Johnson started her job just more than one year ago, she has had to work quickly to change her menus and vending machines to keep up with Ohio’s Senate Bill 210 (which requires the adoption of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s Nutrition Guidelines) as well as the new USDA school meal regulations. Johnson began this effort last year by adding more fruits and...

It is the time of year when families pull out cookbooks and decorations and think about who to invite for holiday celebrations. Along with these important decisions, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation encourages you to go into the holidays with a plan for keeping your family moving more and eating healthier during this time of celebration. 5 Ideas for Your Healthy Holiday Game Plan 1) Replace Appetizers with Fitnetizers Instead of watching professionals play sports on television, encourage your family and/or neighbors to join together for a “fitnetizer,” a pre-meal physical activity such...

Shocking though it may seem, the celebration of Halloween as a time to binge on candy is a recent phenomenon. For thousands of years this holiday has been a time to celebrate the transition from summer and the harvest to the start of the dark, cold winter. Of course this was often associated with death and ghosts. People built bonfires and danced in costumes. Apples were incorporated about 2,000 years ago by the Romans to honor their goddess of fruit and trees. Now we celebrate candy corn and chocolate instead. This year I have teamed up with some friends who also want Halloween to be more...

Have you ever been taken off guard by a child’s question about weight? Like, “Mom, am I fat?” or “Can I go on a diet?” Many parents hear heartbreaking stories from their children about being teased on the bus or know that their child is worried about changing clothes in front of others for physical education class. And parents struggle with what to say and how to say it. In fact, a WebMD/Sanford Health survey found that parents of teens find it more difficult to talk about weight with their child than talking about sex, drugs, alcohol or smoking! Experts at the Strategies to Overcome and...

DALLAS, TX -- Since Hector P. Garcia Middle School joined the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s Healthy Schools Program two years ago, nurse Sandra Coleman has been intent on making impactful changes. She is greatly concerned by the increase in childhood obesity rates and has learned that sometimes gradual changes and compromises are necessary to win over the minds, hearts and stomachs of students and staff.
