As a mother, I was shocked to learn that foods like chicken nuggets or canned chicken soup could soon contain chicken that was processed in China -- a country with one of the worst food safety records in the world! Even if you, or your school's cafeteria manager, want to avoid chicken processed in China, you're out of luck -- processed chicken products do not require country of origin labeling. My NYSHEPA colleagues and I worked hard for years to get menu labeling laws passed locally in New York. Over 60 percent of our state is now covered by menu labeling ordinances. We also worked hard to get a federal menu labeling law passed in 2010, so that all consumers would see calories posted, on menus and menu boards, at chain food establishments.
