My friend Jenn has always been an incredible athlete. When we went to summer camp together, for many years she was given various awards for “Best All-Around Athlete” and “Most Sportsmanship.” Many years (we won’t say how many) have gone by since we spent our summers at an all-girl’s camp in Maine, but one thing about Jenn hasn’t changed: she is still pushing herself athletically. Now that we are adults I have followed her various running pursuits through Facebook and have always been impressed by the dedication and perseverance her (and her husband Doug, also a runner) have shown race after race, marathon after marathon. I consider myself a jogger—in the loosest use of the term. So anyone who can run a marathon—let alone 23—blows my mind.
But this past weekend Jenn truly blew me out of the water. As I sat on my couch on Sunday, I started to get Facebook updates from Jenn and Doug about the Disney Marathon she was running. Normally, this would just be a passing moment where I check out a picture and give her a “like” since I’ve known she’s done this before. But just 3 months ago Jenn gave birth to her third child, beautiful Georgia, so I started to pay closer attention knowing this would probably be a challenging run for Jenn. I had no idea! Not only did Jenn complete the marathon, but she did so while stopping half way through the race to breast pump so her little girl would have enough milk to eat and she could continue the race in more comfort. Jenn is officially a Super Mom!
Here is how the day went down in Jenn and Doug’s words:
Jenn:
“This was my 23rd marathon on Sunday. We have been coming to the Disney Marathon weekend for 16 years. In 2006 they offered the Goofy Challenge: run the 1/2 marathon Saturday and the full marathon Sunday. I have run all of them and I'm part of a group known as "perfectly goofy." It meant a lot to me to come here this weekend and run my 10th Goofy Challenge and stay "perfectly goofy." It was my slowest marathon but in so many ways my best. I struggled to breastfeed my boys and things this time around with Georgia have been so different. I’m a labor and delivery nurse. I don't push breastfeeding on any one, especially given my own struggles. So Doug and I got a plan that he would come meet me around mile 19ish and we would walk and pump! We do what we have to do as moms!!”
Doug:
“As you know Jenn COMPLETED the Goofy Challenge (1/2 marathon on Saturday, marathon on Sunday) today at Disney for the 10th consecutive year. Amazing on its own right? But this year she did it 3 months after having a baby and is in the midst of breast feeding our baby girl. This is a picture of her at 20 miles hand pumping the extra milk to make her more comfortable. Just because you have had a baby does not mean you can't or shouldn't chase your dreams! She is an absolutely amazing woman and I am extremely proud to call her my wife. I love you and great job Jenn.”
Congrats Jenn on an excellent run and thank you Doug for supporting your family the entire way.
