Great news! Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown and other city leaders are going the extra mile to make sure our kids have the health coverage they need!

Jacksonville was recently awarded a grant through the National League of Cities to connect uninsured kids with low-cost KidCare and Medicaid coverage. With more than 17,000 uninsured children in Duval County alone, this Cover Jacksonville campaign can help us go a long way toward decreasing the number of uninsured children in our community. 

This is important because when children have health insurance, they enjoy better health throughout childhood, demonstrate greater academic performance, and are less reliant on emergency healthcare services.

By sharing your thanks, we'll show Mayor Brown and other city officials that ensuring children have quality, affordable healthcare is popular and they should keep at it. As an added bonus, as city workers begin implementing this new campaign, we'll show them that moms have their backs!

The goal of this initiative is to help reduce the uninsured rate for children and families in Jacksonville by 20​%! The Jacksonville Children’s Commission is working with Health Commissioner Mia Jones and community partners to coordinate resources and communication in order to strengthen and expand outreach and education to families who may qualify for the Florida KidCare program. Additionally, families can get coverage information and set up a free appointment with an application assister by calling 211.

Health coverage is an investment that makes a positive difference for families and communities.

Children who don’t have health coverage often miss out on important preventative care and their parents can be forced to rely on expensive emergency services that frequently plunge families into financial crisis. These costs are steep for families and are also a significant financial burden on the cities where they live. In contrast, kids who have health insurance are more likely to get regular care and be better equipped to do well in school. 

We can all do our part to help connect Jacksonville children to health coverage. By celebrating this step towards improving access to health coverage, we’ll help create momentum for our community to ensure all children have the coverage they need to be healthy and ready to learn.
