Every August, the lactation community joins together to celebrate and uplift this natural (and sometimes incredibly hard) journey of infant feeding. The month is kicked off with a World Breastfeeding Week Celebration and and follows with weekly celebrations centering historically underrepresented groups. Just like every drop of human milk counts, each of us together has the power to support and protect lactation.
We were thrilled to kick off the celebration with a live chat featuring Author and Lactation Consultant, Nasheeda Pollard, IBCLC. She shared the inspiration behind her children’s book Magical Milk and even treated us to a sneak peak of this beautiful story.
“I do not recall seeing anybody in my family breastfeed…I want to spark those conversations really early on.”
Our social channels shared a number of important facts about the reality for many families in the United States including the impact that adequate parental leave plays in sustaining lactation beyond the first few days, despite large initiation rates. We also took part in a live tweet chat with the USDA and National WIC Association who answered some common questions families have about infant nutrition and support services available, such as WIC peer counselors.
In conjunction with this years World Breastfeeding Week theme "Step by Step" our MamásConPoder staff created a new playlist that expresses the love and strength it takes to nourish a tiny growing person: Paso a Paso: P'alante Amamantando. We rounded out the month celebrating Black Breastfeeding Week while attending this year's R.O.S.E.
