Great news! Governor Susana Martinez just announced that New Mexico will expand Medicaid coverage, an option made available under the Affordable Care Act. This means that 170,000 more people will be able to receive health coverage in New Mexico!
This is a significant step forward for New Mexicans' health.
According to a report by the New Mexico Center on Law & Poverty:
- Nearly one in three adults ages 19 to 64 in New Mexico is uninsured, leaving the state as the second highest rate of uninsured people in the nation
- With the Medicaid expansion option under the health care law, over 170,000 uninsured adults could gain access to health coverage, including parents, veterans, low-wager workers, the homeless and recently jobless
- Expansion of Medicaid can also mean the creation of 8,461 new job by 2020 and $523.4 million in revenue generated to the state general fund between 2014 and 2020
- Based on a polling conducted last fall, the majority of New Mexican voters supported expanding Medicaid to cover 170,000 more people.
New Mexicans, we want to hear from you! Will you and your family likely gain coverage under Medicaid expansion? Do you have affordable health coverage? If not, what would health coverage mean for you and your family?
