As a mom who works to support her family, good childcare is an absolute necessity for us—without it, I couldn't work. And if I couldn't work, we couldn't pay our bills.
I'm lucky I can afford childcare, because there are hundreds of thousands of families who can't. They rely on programs like Head Start to be able to work or go to school, and know that their children are in good hands.
Now the Republicans want to strip more than a billion dollars from Head Start and childcare assistance, leaving an estimated 368,000 children without early learning support, and leaving their parents unable to work. They're also cutting funding for education, police, emergency response and vital human services, and then handing that money over in the form of tax cuts to corporations and the very rich. In Wisconsin, they've gone a step further and tried to take away workers rights to negotiate collectively.
The other day I heard a story on the radio that said "luxury shoppers" are making a comeback. Meanwhile, millions of people can't find jobs. While luxury shoppers have more money to buy shoes at Saks Fifth Avenue, many regular Americans can't even afford the basics. The economic recovery is disproportionately benefiting those at the top, while those at the bottom struggle to put food on the table. The American Dream is slipping out of our grasp.
That's why I wanted to help get the word out about the rally this Saturday, February 26 at noon.
All across the country, in every major city, people of conscience will be gathering at state houses to save the American Dream, to stand in solidarity with the people of Wisconsin, and to send a powerful message to our representatives that they have a duty to represent all Americans, not just their rich friends. Consider this your personal invitation:

- believe workers in Wisconsin have rights
