The beaches are crowded. The fireworks have come and gone. And everywhere I go, the smell of grills, chlorine, and perpetual sunscreen follows me. It’s summer time; Sweltering, smack-in-the-middle of the season summer time.

The summer holidays aren’t the only things to have come and gone. Summer movie season has more or less wrapped up, with all of the explosive popcorn flicks and wildly anticipated sequels rapidly aging out of a year’s worth of promotional hype. And with most of this years summer fare clocking in around the two hour plus mark, it might surprise you that my favorite summer blockbuster is a mere 2.5 minutes long. Unlike the cinematic disappointments I weathered throughout early June, this film delivers. Scandal, intrigue, scheming big-shots and maniacal villains, all preying on one victim: the American public.

This summer’s break-out star, my favorite smirking baby bottle Bisephenol-A, is right; We have a war on our hands, people! Poisonous baby bottles, toxic toys, and chemical-laden cookware: this should be the stuff of horror movies, not the objects we interact in our day to day lives. Under the current toxics legislation, the EPA has only been able to require testing on about 200 of the 80,000 chemicals that have been on the market since the law passed in 1976.

Congress is currently considering legislation to reform the 34 year old Toxic Substances Control Act, which would improve protections for public health and the environment from toxic chemicals. MomsRising and the Safer Chemicals Coalition are hard at work fighting for TSCA reform, but we have a powerful opponent: The chemicals lobby. Yes, they claim to support reforming our broken system, even going so far as to create fake grassroots groups, like the one shown in the video. But while we fight for TSCA reform, the Chemicals lobby keeps doing everything they can to block chemical regulations on the state and federal level.

We can’t protect our kids and families from toxics without the help of federal legislation. To gain real MOMentum on this important issue, we need your help. Tell Congress that it’s time to get serious about TSCA. Chemicals reform should meet the needs of real people and kids, not just the chemical industry. Click here and tell Congress that when it comes to toxics, we want a happy ending, not a horror movie.
