#MilitaryMonday: Zoë's Story

June 6, 2016
My daughter Zoë is a 2-year-old toddler who is unfortunately fighting a battle against a unique brain tumor. Her fight started when she was just 15 months old and her doctors spoke one word... cancer! At the time our family lived in Honolulu, Hawaii where her father was stationed with the US Army...

3 ways to slow down this summer

May 31, 2016
One of my touchstones for gauging how fast–or slow–I’m living, is noticing if I have a vase of fresh herbs and flowers on my desk. When I’m living the life I desire, I create the time to meander in my garden and pick colorful, fragrant flowers and plants to enjoy in my office. What’s your...

SNAP, TANF, and a Better Path

May 26, 2016
The nation’s core economic security programs are highly effective: they cut poverty almost in half, improve nutrition and health care for millions of people, and promote work. 6 ways to find comfort in uncertain times

May 24, 2016
Last week I had a brush with someone I’ve known a long time who acted uncharacteristically rude and unkind. While their behavior was immature and irrational, rather than rise up to counter him, I just walked away and let it be. This was not only wise, it was good self-care. Lately, I have observed...

Fact of the Week: 1 in 3 Moms Struggle to Pay for Diapers

May 23, 2016
Everyone knows babies go through a lot of diapers. But for low-income families, the cost of diapers often forces them to go without another necessity, like food or heat. For many, it can force them to leave babies in soiled diapers longer than they’d like, leading to physical and mental health issues for baby and mom. A Journey Out of the Darkness: Climb Out of the Darkness 2016

May 19, 2016
It is not often that you hear about the darkness that can accompany becoming a mom. Nine years ago I learned that the motherhood experience can contain more than nursery colors, cocoa butter for fading stretch marks, and breastfeeding. My son was six months old and not sleeping through the night...

This past Sunday afternoon everyone in our family had competing desires: my son wanted to have a friend over, I wanted to get a massage and my husband wanted to play at a house concert with his band. We juggled and all ended up getting our needs met, but the person who returned home most...

May 11, 2016
Hearing a woman’s voice come over the intercom before takeoff, “this is your captain speaking,” can be a moving experience, even today: She made it! She beat the odds! A stirring sense of admiration as you check that your seatbelt is indeed securely fastened for takeoff. But women who work in roles...

Are you choosing love ... or fear?

May 10, 2016
This past Sunday evening on Mother’s Day, I returned home from an amazing retreat feeling euphoric and transformed. My husband and son picked me up from the airport. My teen had just returned from a late-night sleepover so my expectations for the evening were low: a quick bite out at our favorite...
