It has been reported that the Trump presidency has inspired hundreds of thousands of people to become politically active , as if Americans have been hibernating. In this political climate, one thing has become very evident, President Trump has woken the sleeping bear. Large numbers of voters on both sides of the political spectrum have been marching, protesting and attending Congressional town halls. Despite what 45’s tweets may claim , these people are NOT paid protestors. They are average citizens: voters and concerned Americans, like me and you. They are Main Street USA dependent on the...

Your friends share petitions on Facebook and maybe you sign them or scroll past. Or perhaps, you have that one issue you feel passionate about. Maybe you’ve joined a few Facebook groups for support with like-minded moms. Does that make you an advocate? If you find yourself spurting out facts about an issue, educating friends and family on statistics, busting myths and falsehoods around an issue. Then, yes, you are an advocate. For me as a former educator turned WAHM mom, I am most certainly an advocate fighting the #GoodFoodForce fight with MomsRising, demanding clearer food labeling, recess...

Halloween is lurking around the corner. But for some families, it isn’t the chill in the air, haunted houses or costumes that have them scared. For parents of children living with severe allergies, it’s the possibility of their child ingesting a lethal allergen which could ultimately lead death. According to FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education), “severe food allergies affect 1 in every 13 children” and approximately “every three minutes, a food allergy reaction sends someone to the emergency room. That is more than 200,000 emergency department visits per year. “ For parents of...

In a life before my SAHM days, I was an elementary school teacher. Early on in my teaching days, I learned the importance of an efficient file system, good recordkeeping and how to organize my student’s work – what to keep and what to send home. While I’ve been home for 14 years, those organizational skills remained with me outside the classroom. You can take the teacher out of the classroom, but you can’t teaching out of the teacher! When my oldest daughter started preschool ten years ago, I quickly became buried under a pile of papers. What do I keep and what do I throw away? Which artwork...

As part of the Good Food Force , we often focus on changes for healthy food labeling and tackling food changes in our communities. As a mom of a child with a SEVERE tree nut allergy, this scenario hits too close to home. We've battled friends and family who thought we were being too overprotective or dramatic. Adversely, we've dealt with restaurants and food service that went above and beyond food labeling and cross contamination preparations. Despite a popular misconception, a peanut allergy (or in my child’s case, a tree nut allergy) is not merely an upset stomach, sniffle or rash. It is a...

Meal planning is the most effective way to incorporate and budget healthy eating into your family’s meals. Typically, local supermarkets will share their upcoming sales and deals mid-week. Save the sale ad and begin drafting a shopping list of the meats, fruits and vegetables on sale that week. Browse your favorite blogs, Pinterest and cookbooks for low fat meals. I highly recommend The Skinnytaste Cookbook and Run DMT’s recipes. ;-) If you have picky eaters, get the kids involved to look through the cookbooks and search for recipes that look interesting to them. You’d be surprised as to what...

As more districts experience budget cuts, schools become desperate to find quick and easy methods to raise money for classroom materials and technology. As a parent of three children, I find most fundraising to be tedious and useless. I’d rather perform singing telegrams than try to peddle popcorn bins, cookie dough and candles to family members. Many of the easy fix-fundraisers, such as dinner nights at popular fast food chains, often promote unhealthy lifestyle choices. Parents feel pressured to participate in unprofitable, unhealthy school restaurant nights. Thankfully, schools have begun...

During my college days as I studied to become an elementary school teacher, Wellness and Fitness for the Child was part of my elementary education coursework. Almost twenty years ago, I remember hearing for the first time the horrible truths about saturated fats, food coloring, partially hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn syrup. From then on, I decided to change my diet to live a better life. I began eating more organic and natural foods. I started reading labels and eliminated foods with artificial flavors and artificial coloring, partially hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn...
