This decision by President Trump to leave the Paris Accord is irresponsibly shortsighted and harmful to the United States. There is no credible doubt that climate change is real and is caused by human activity. We have irrefutable data that temperatures are rising, Arctic ice is melting, sea levels are rising, and extreme weather is becoming more severe. This scientific question has been settled for years, yet the few deniers who are still out there have gained outsized and dangerous influence with our President at the expense of our safety and security. For the sake of our country and our...

As a mother, I care deeply about the food that my family eats. And as a lawmaker, I care deeply about New York’s farmers who work tirelessly to supply our country with a wholesome and safe food supply. That’s why, as a member of the Agriculture Committee, I’ve devoted much of my time in the Senate to ensuring that our food system is as safe for our families as possible. It’s also why I have grave concerns about the use of antibiotics in the production of food animals and its impact on the health of our families. The fact is that antibiotics are critical tools for treating illness in humans...

Over the past two years, I've traveled throughout New York meeting with farmers and anti-hunger advocates to develop our priorities for the 2012 Farm Bill. Based on these conversations, I fought for and won several provisions in the bill such as improved crop insurance for fruit and vegetable farmers, rural broadband services to support small business development, and grants and loan financing to build grocery stores in rural and urban food deserts. These conversations also made it clear to me how important SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) is, not only to our struggling...

As we all know, there is no harder, or more rewarding job, than being a Mom. But for so many mothers who work outside of the home, it's made even harder by the lack of equal pay for women in our country. According to the U.S. Census Bureau , women only make 77 cents on the dollar compared to what men make. For women who are mothers, that pay gap is compounded by what is commonly referred to as the "Motherhood Penalty," which amounts to approximately 5% per child on average . To illustrate how wide this gap is, Catalyst compared the median income of a working single mother ($24,487) with that...

I was disheartened to hear Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin recently signed a law that repealed Wisconsin’s Fair Pay Act. This commonsense piece of legislation, like the Lilly Ledbetter Act signed into law by President Obama in 2009, was designed to make it easier for victims of wage discrimination to pursue compensatory damages. The law was meant to deter employers from paying certain workers less for equal work, and to put us on a path toward pay equity in this country. It’s unfortunate that Governor Walker saw fit to roll back these protections. The fact is, with the economy still in a...

For most parents, a trip to the pharmacy shopping for baby products is a routine experience. And while we make choices on which products to buy for any number of reasons, we would never imagine any one of these products could be unsafe. We have faith that baby products are safe for our kids because our government wouldn’t allow toxic chemicals in children’s shampoos, pillows or toys. But, the truth is, we are going on faith alone. When I arrived in the Senate I was shocked to learn that regulators have been prevented from testing all of the 70,000 chemicals found in everyday home products. In...

Since 2007, 11 million drop-side cribs have been recalled – including through 14 different recalls by 8 crib companies – due to the danger of death to infants. The plastic materials that drop-side cribs are made of can break off or become loose, causing children to slip through the gap and risk suffocation or strangulation. As a US Senator and as a mother of two young boys – Theo, who is seven, and Henry, who is three – I expect the federal government to take decisive action when our children’s lives are at risk. Which is why just over a year ago, after meeting a parent who had lost an infant...

This week, the U.S. Supreme Court blocked up to 1.6 million women from suing Walmart for sex discrimination in a class action lawsuit. The court's 5-4 conservative majority sided with business over women, claiming that Walmart's well-documented wage and hiring disparities are coincidences and not a result of a persistent culture of discrimination. This is unacceptable. In the U.S. today, women are paid only 78 cents on the dollar that men make. If the highest court in the land won't protect women from discrimination in the workplace, then we must stand together and demand action from Congress...

As we celebrate Mother's Day today, we pay tribute to our extraordinary mothers, grandmothers, daughters, and sisters who are a beacon of strength in our families, our communities, and our nation, particularly in these difficult economic times. And that means we must pledge, now more than ever, to make sure women have the opportunities and tools to excel through the ranks of our workforce. The well being of our families depends on it and the strength of the middle class depends on it. Recent figures show that for the first time, women are gaining more advanced college and bachelor's degrees...

As we continue to mourn the passing of Geraldine Ferraro, and honor her extraordinary life, women today must not forget the words she spoke in her 1984 convention speech, “The issue is not what America can do for women, but what women can do for America.” These words should serve as a clarion call for this generation of women to take action in advancing women’s progress. So, as we mark yet another Equal Pay Day today, we also remember that in that same inspiring speech Geraldine Ferraro said, “It isn't right that a woman should get paid 59 cents on the dollar for the same work as a man.” She...

The 2010 election was a mandate for one thing: creating jobs and strengthening our economy for the long term. I heard that message loud and clear from New York families in every corner of our state, and I am working with my colleagues in Congress on solutions that will help create good-paying jobs and get the economy moving again for everyone. But, instead of focusing on rebuilding the economy, House Republicans have unleashed an extreme ideological attack on America’s women and working families with HR 1, the first bill they introduced this Congress. The House-passed bill slashed critical...

Child obesity is a crisis in this country. Over the last 30 years, child obesity rates have reached historic highs - more than tripling from just 5 percent to nearly 18 percent today. We must make improving child nutrition a top priority. If we fail to get serious about this issue today, we will face very serious consequences down the road. To get people focused on this emerging issue, I asked Rachael Ray to come to Washington last week to help me lobby my colleagues in Congress on the Child Nutrition bill. Rachael is so much more than just another celebrity with a cause. She likes to say...

Each year approximately 87 million Americans -- 5 million in New York alone -- are made ill by contaminated food. Of those, 371,000 are hospitalized with foodborne illness, and 5,700 die. In 2010 America, this is simply unacceptable. The fact is, our food safety laws have not truly been overhauled in more than a century. Back in December, in my post "A New Approach To Food Safety," I wrote about the importance of developing a new comprehensive food safety agenda that brings these laws up to date and focuses on prevention and notification. As I wrote then: ...we must improve public education...

As the mother of two young boys, food safety is extremely important to me, as I know it is to all of you. I'm sorry to say though, that right now, the statistics are startling. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), every year an estimated 87 million Americans are sickened by contaminated food, 371,000 are hospitalized with food-borne illness, and 5,700 die from food-related disease. Of these illnesses, 1 million are caused by salmonella and another 70,000 are due to E. coli. According to a recent report from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), 1...

Too often lost in the debate over health care reform is the importance of preventive measures such as exercise and healthy eating to ensure that a doctor's visit is less likely to be needed in the first place. This is especially true for children whose early brain development and future health depend on good nutrition in the first years of life, which is why I introduced The Access To Nutritious Meals For Young Children Act. This bill will strengthen the Child And Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), a program funded by the Child Nutrition Act, which provides meals to children enrolled in Head...

While Washington continues to debate the need for a health care overhaul, a related challenge gets far too little attention. Over the past 40 years, child obesity has increased dramatically - rising by 150% among 2 to 5 year olds, 400% among children 6 to 11 years old and more than 300% among young adults age 12 to 19. Now, nearly 17% of all children are obese. This is much more than an individual or family problem. It's a pressing national crisis. Obesity puts our children at risk of developing serious diseases - such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and depression. It keeps our children...

More parents than ever are balancing work and raising children. When I was growing up, just over one-third of mothers with young children worked outside the home. Today, it’s nearly two-thirds. The cost of quality child care is steadily increasing across New York. families across New York are paying approximately $10,400 per year for an infant, $9,100 per year for a toddler and $8,300 per year for a school aged child. As a working mother of two young sons, I understand the tough decisions these families face. That’s why I created a plan to make quality child care more affordable. First, I...

Autism affects more American children than pediatric cancer, diabetes and AIDS combined. It’s a heartbreaking disease that approximately 29,400 children in every corner of New York suffer from. Despite autism’s far reach, insurance companies still don’t provide comprehensive coverage for effective treatments, and parents are paying the price – up to $6,000 a month for their child’s treatment. Last week in Washington, I unveiled a plan to provide quality autism treatment that’s affordable for families. Please take a look. Senator Gillibrand's Plan on Autism First, I’m pursuing a mandate on...
