Media advisory ** Media Advisory for 9 am Thursday, February 2, 2023 **  Three decades after the Family and Medical Leave Act became law, giving about three in five U.S. workers access to unpaid leave, America’s moms and families are telling Congress: We’re tired of being in the shadows. We need paid leave for all now!

Statement “America’s moms are heartsick and horrified by the brutal police murder of Tyre Nichols. No words can convey our deep, endless sorrow that a father, a son, a man who was simply driving his car in his own neighborhood was brutally murdered by the very people whose job it is to protect us.

Statement “Last night, on the eve of the first day of the Lunar New Year, celebrated by millions of Asian Americans in the United States, a man opened fire at a dance studio in Monterey Park, killing ten and injuring ten more. This is the 5th mass shooting in the United States already in 2023, and one more excruciating reminder of the devastation gun violence is causing our communities and our country.

Statement “This weekend, instead of celebrating the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade and all the promise it once brought, the nation continues to reel from last June’s cruel, horrific ruling by SCOTUS in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. Make no mistake: America’s moms reject the dangerous post-Roe world the U.S. Supreme Court has created, and anti-abortion extremism in all its forms.

News release “The moms and families who seek asylum in the United States are trying to escape violence and persecution to protect and care for their children. It is disappointing that the Biden administration is adopting policies that will deny access to asylum for so many of them while putting unaccompanied children in danger and consigning thousands of vulnerable moms and families to grave physical harm when they are expelled to Mexico.

Statement The country’s moms and families won a major, meaningful, long overdue victory today when the U.S. Senate included the PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act and the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act in the FY23 budget bill. When lawmakers enact these two essential measures, breastfeeding moms will no longer be forced to pump breastmilk in bathrooms, cars, closets and cafeterias; and fewer pregnant workers will be forced out of their jobs because employers deny them reasonable accommodations like carrying water bottles and taking more bathroom breaks.

Statement “The FY23 budget Congress will vote on this week contains welcome new investments in maternal and child health and child nutrition – but in many other ways, this budget fails moms and families. It will perpetuate hardship and poverty, harming families and damaging our economy for years to come. Moms expected and deserve better.

Statement “Our nation is more fair and will be more successful now that the Respect for Marriage Act is law. This badly needed law reaffirms the freedom to marry the person you love. It protects the marriages of same-sex and interracial couples, repeals the discriminatory, deceptively named Defense of Marriage Act, and makes federal benefits available to married couples no matter which state they live in.
