Prior to the House Healthcare Reform legislation passing last week 220-215, the House voted on the Stupak-Pitts Amendment which restricted the use of federal and private funds to cover abortions. The Democrats in Congress took a gamble that in order to be able to garner sufficient votes to pass the House Healthcare Reform, they would include language that would offer a new level of restrictions to abortion funding to appease conservatives and pro-life legislators. Late Saturday night, the House of Representatives voted on the historic healthcare reform legislation that has been heavily debated for the past few months. After long summer months where our legislators went back to their home districts to listen to their constituents talk about their healthcare concerns and where heavy lobbying by supporters and opponents occurred, the House finally voted. 220-215 to pass their version of the Healthcare reform legislation. As Sonia Sotomayor is voted in as our next Justice of the Supreme Court, she represents a critical addition to the Supreme Court's bench. She is a highly qualified judge who has risen through the ranks, offered measured and moderate opinions and is one of the most qualified candidates to be considered for this lifelong appointment.
