Statement "It's easy to think about giving up in times like these. But we can't. The current situation is simply not okay. More than 20,000 children are injured or killed by guns each year, more  than 33,000 people are killed by guns each year, and just last week 49 people in Orlando were gunned down in a LGBTQ+ safe space on Latino night by a mass shooter using a military-style assault weapon with a high capacity magazine that has no legitimate civilian use.

Statement “The Philadelphia City Council today stood up for children’s health by passing a tax on soda that will go to expand pre-K and invest in parks, community schools, recreation centers, and libraries. The new tax will support important investments in our city's children. It will also help to reduce children’s consumption of sugary carbonated beverages that have no nutritional value and have been linked to a range of serious lifelong health problems including diabetes, heart disease and obesity.

Statement “There are no words. We are heartbroken for the victims, their families, the city of Orlando, the LGBTQ+ community, and for our nation.    “Gun violence is never the answer.   “Today we mourn, tomorrow we rise for gun safety policies that bring real safety and real change. And we rise to stand against all hate crimes. There were 372 mass shootings in 2015 alone. This can't continue.”

Statement "The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Education and the Workforce last week voted legislation out of committee that will turn back the clock on the advances we’ve made in improving childhood nutrition over the last five years. This reauthorization bill will actually reduce children’s access to the healthy and nutritious meals they need to thrive. It would cut off food programs for tens of thousands of children who need them and create unnecessary barriers that would prevent additional children from enrolling.

Statement “The bill introduced this week in the U.S. House of Representatives to reauthorize the federal child nutrition programs actually weakens those programs, which are intended to ensure that children have access to the healthy and nutritious meals they need to thrive. It would cut off food programs for tens of thousands of children who need them and create unnecessary barriers that would prevent additional children from enrolling.

News release On the last day of the Maryland legislative session, the State Senate failed to follow the lead of the Maryland House of Delegates in passing historic legislation requiring companies of more than 15 people to allow their employees to earn up to seven days of paid sick leave. The legislation, which has taken more than three years to pass the State legislature passed the House of Delegates 84-54 last week. Right now, more than 700,000 Marylanders lack access to paid sick leave, despite recent polling showing that 83% of Maryland residents support such legislation.

Statement “It’s Equal Pay Day again. The day when women will have earned the same amount men did in the previous year. That means that on average, it takes women 15 months to earn what men make in 12. It takes women of color and mothers even longer. That’s just shameful.
