Two months ago, my heart froze when I heard about a school shooting at a high school near me in the Seattle-area. On Oct. 24, a shooter killed 4 classmates before fatally wounding himself at Marysville Pilchuck High School.

My daughter, Violet, has a rare, life-threatening health condition. When she was young, she had hundreds of seizures, sometimes 30 a day. Her hospital visits sometimes cost more than $250,000 EACH. Before healthcare reform, we had a lifetime limit on Violet’s insurance policy. Now we don’t. Now she’s not going to die because we can’t afford the medicine.

A few years ago, all three of my children got sick with the nasty H1N1 flu. I ended up missing several weeks of work to care for them. I got no sick pay and my husband and I slipped deeper into debt. It took us years to dig out. No parent should have to choose between caring for a seriously ill child and a paycheck or a job.
