When Breast Milk Goes Big Business

May 14, 2015
This past weekend I joined a dozen of local mothers (and fathers) for a stroll walk , raising funds and awareness for the importance of human donor milk. Why donor milk? Well, much has been said about the benefits of breast milk for babies. It is the feeding method recommended by the American...

Celebrating The Moms of Action This Mother's Day

May 11, 2015
Reposted from Role Reboot where it originally appeared. When mothers get angry about the state of their neighborhoods, cities, nations or earth, they have always been on the front lines for change. Let’s celebrate them this Mother’s Day. I have a conflicted relationship with Mother’s Day. I have...

Happy Mother's Day! (cringe)

May 8, 2015
Mother's Day — you might wonder why a woman would cringe at that. Maybe she recently lost a child or suffered a miscarriage. Maybe she misses her mother. But often, it's because she's experiencing infertility. Mother's Day can be incredibly difficult for women experiencing infertility. Why I unplugged on my busiest day ever

May 4, 2015
Last Monday morning I returned to mountains of work having been off for a week with my family for spring break (when we go on vacation we generally go "off the grid"). In addition to hundreds of emails, phone messages and requests for my time, I received several big, timely work opportunities for...

7 reasons to choose love over fear

May 4, 2015
After a sweet early morning Easter meditation yesterday, I left my husband asleep and headed downstairs to see my 13 year-old. Reading on the couch in his pajamas, he looked up and begged me for raspberries and blueberry waffles for breakfast. I was feeling loving and had the time and bandwidth for...

On the Front Lines of a Broken System

April 28, 2015
I met my future daughter in Operatory #10 at the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation clinic in Bethel, Alaska 16 years ago. She was 3-years-old, in foster care, and lying there in terrible pain. Her face was swollen from an abscessed tooth, her temperature was 104 degrees. My heart went out to her...
