Unprecedented. So much about 2020 feels unprecedented and this election is no exception.
The peaceful transition of power is core to our democracy and protecting our democracy requires active participation in that democracy. That active participation takes many forms - from talking with your friends and family to in-person demonstrations.
Given the global COVID-19 pandemic, MomsRising.org is not at this time encouraging participation in any in-person, on-the-ground gatherings. We know, however, that a lot of people will understandably want to participate in such events. We’re offering up this list of resources to help folks make a plan and be prepared for on-the-ground events. If you are planning to go out and protest post-election, below are some things you should know and some resources available to you.

The American Civil Liberties Union’s (ACLU) Know Your Rights: Protesters’ Rights resource provides guidance on the rights of those organizations or attending a protest. While The First Amendment protects your right to assemble and express your views through protest, police and other government officials are allowed to place certain narrow restrictions on the exercise of speech rights. Please take the time to brush up on your rights before heading out to a demonstration or protest.

The Center for Global Health Science and Security at Georgetown University offers COVID-19 Informed Protest Guidance. These graphics provide guidance that at a minimum, this includes wearing a mask, maintaining distancing measures when possible, and getting tested if you think you’ve been exposed.

The National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum’s Know Your Rights document is intended to provide you with basic information for attending protests. They offer guidance on protesting while undocumented, what to do if your rights have been violated and what to do if you are injured during a protest without insurance.
Our resource list is by no means comprehensive. If you do plan to exercise your right to protest on or after election day please be safe and take care of yourself.
