Statement “America’s moms are looking to Congress to pass a budget that includes long overdue investments that will alleviate our country’s maternal health crisis, which is affecting communities of color the most. It is unacceptable that the United States has the highest rate of maternal deaths during labor and delivery of any developed nation, and that Black women’s maternal mortality rate is four times that of white women. There is no reason why -- in the richest country in the entire world -- systemic disparities and implicit bias in the health care system continue to take such a terrible toll.

Statement “Today the U.S. House of Representatives took a hugely important step to protect every American’s right to vote and secure our democracy by passing H.R. 4, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. This bill restores and modernizes the Voting Rights Act, protecting our freedom to vote, and helping ensure elections are safe and accessible.

Statement “The suffering the people of Haiti are experiencing is almost unimaginable, with last weekend’s devastating earthquake and the tropical storm that followed compounding the trauma and unrest caused by the assassination of the country’s president. There is no question that Haiti is not safe right now, and that is why the Biden administration extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) until early 2023 – even before the earthquake. But unfortunately, deportations have continued and that must end.

Statement “The wage gap -- now just 63 cents paid to Black women for every dollar paid to white men -- continues to take a devastating toll on Black communities. We cannot have a just recovery from the pandemic unless we close it and end the many forms of discrimination and oppression that Black women continue to face. The wage gap is even more damaging for Black moms, who are paid just 52 cents on the dollar compared to white dads.

Statement “For 45 long years, the cruel, discriminatory Hyde Amendment has been a stain on our country, denying health care to low-income women, perpetuating racism, and putting vulnerable women and moms at risk. Today, the U.S. House of Representatives took a bold, long overdue step to end Hyde and its devastating bans on coverage for abortion care. This is a good day for women’s health and for reproductive, racial and economic justice.

Statement “Home is here for the hundreds of thousands of immigrant youth whose lives and futures were upended, yet again, when a federal judge partially ended DACA Friday evening. These young people are parents to more than a quarter of a million U.S.-citizen children and pay millions of dollars in taxes each year. Many are serving on the frontlines during the pandemic, keeping us safe by providing health care and doing other essential work. Now, once again, they are at risk for deportation and being separated from their families.
