Statement “Manuela ‘Mona’ Rodriguez was a mother, a daughter, and a sister and she should be alive today. Instead, she was shot in the back of the head and murdered by Eddie F. Gonzalez, a school safety officer. The school district was right to fire Gonzalez, who murdered Mona, and the Long Beach Police Department’s investigation should result in murder charges being filed against him. Gonzalez did not fire in self-defense or to protect a life. He was criminally reckless and must be held accountable.

Statement “If the Axios report is true, Senator Manchin has some explaining to do to moms and families in West Virginia and across America. Moms, families, businesses, and our economy need paid leave when serious illness strikes or a new child comes, affordable child care, AND home- and community-based services for people with disabilities and seniors.

Statement “We are disappointed in the U.S. Senate parliamentarian’s ruling last night - refusing to allow budget reconciliation to be used to update an outdated law from 1986; the U.S. Senate has passed immigration-related provisions in at least five budget reconciliation bills in the past and some were far-reaching. But despite the ruling, the nation is still relying on Congress to pass legislation that provides permanent protections and pathways to citizenship for Dreamers, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders, farm workers, and essential workers this year.

Statement “Today, the U.S. House of Representatives took an essential step to protect women’s health and rights, dignity and autonomy, by passing the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA) of 2021. This bill will protect access to abortion care for everyone in this country, no matter where they live. Its enactment is especially important for low-income women, people of color, individuals with disabilities, and other vulnerable communities who are suffering grave harm from S.B.

Statement “We were shaken and deeply disturbed by the video of U.S. Border Patrol agents on horseback attacking asylum-seekers, including a child, in Texas yesterday. And we are profoundly saddened that our government is deporting asylum-seeking families to Haiti at this time when a crippling earthquake, destructive tropical storm, and deep-seated political unrest have created a massive humanitarian crisis there. There is no question that Haiti is not safe right now.
