Statement “The House of Representatives did what was right today by rejecting President Trump’s disgraceful, politically motivated, utterly bogus declaration of a national emergency. We strongly urge the U.S. Senate to do the same. Manufacturing a national emergency in order to build a wall the country neither wants, nor needs, is despicable – a gross violation of the President’s powers and a dangerous threat to the checks and balances our Constitution guarantees.

Statement “America’s moms and families are looking to the new Congress to make speedy progress on the issues that matter most, and paid family and medical leave is at the top of our lists. We need a comprehensive paid family and medical leave program that allows all workers to care for their families without risking their jobs or financial security.

Statement “The Trump administration – and specifically the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) – has demonstrated a horrifying, disgraceful willingness to violate human rights by separating children from their families, detaining asylum-seekers without cause, and imprisoning families indefinitely. It is past time for Congress to step in, starting with limiting the number of detention beds ICE can use for immigrants arrested within the country.

Statement “It has become increasingly and painfully clear that the cruelty the Trump administration is inflicting on asylum-seeking families is unprecedented, unthinkable and utterly unacceptable. Today’s House Oversight Committee hearing on the damage caused by the administration’s family separation policy is a stark reminder that our government is violating the fundamental human rights of vulnerable families and putting countless moms and children at risk for trauma and long-term emotional and mental health problems.

Statement “America’s moms are greater than fear. We reject the hatred and division President Trump peddled again tonight. We will not be pitted against each other by a President who wants to distract us while he wastes billions of dollars on an unnecessary, wasteful wall and adopts destructive tax schemes that leave working families behind while shifting even more wealth to ultra-rich corporations and individuals.
