Fact of the Week: Three-quarters of states still have higher levels of need than before the Great Recession

Residents in 37 states and the District of Columbia were still experiencing higher levels of need in 2017 than they were in 2007, before the Great Recession. In 16 states, need more than doubled from 2007 to 2017. Only 13 states had lower levels of need in 2017 than in 2007.

With Attorney General Sessions’ recent announcement of a “zero tolerance” policy towards parents and children crossing the border, humane standards have been abandoned. Children are taken from their parents. Toddlers taken away crying; mothers not knowing where they are going, unable to contact them for weeks or months. This is shameful.
